As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute—designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s team of internationally recognized physicians and researchers is driven by a singular focus and mission, to help individuals fight cancer. Through the transformation of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice, together with our partner RWJBarnabas Health, we target cancer with clinical trials, precision medicine, immunotherapy, proton therapy, stem cell transplantation, and CAR-T Cell therapy, to provide the most advanced, comprehensive, and compassionate world-class cancer care to adults and children close to home. Patients have access to these cutting-edge therapies throughout the state at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick and Newark, as well as at RWJBarnabas Health facilities across the state.

The coveted NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation, awarded to only 49 such centers nationwide, is granted competitively to institutions characterized by their scientific leadership, resources, and depth and breadth of an outstanding track record of research discoveries in basic, clinical, and population science as well as the ability to translate these discoveries to benefit patients. To gain a Comprehensive Cancer Center designation, the highest ranking given by the NCI, a center must meet rigorous criteria in cancer care, research, prevention, and education and demonstrate an added depth and breadth of research, as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas.

Researchers from Rutgers Cancer Institute have made outstanding scientific contributions towards the national goal of reducing the incidence of cancer and improving outcomes for cancer patients. The center coordinates basic, clinical, translational, and population research through five comprehensive research programs comprised of more than 230 faculty members who form cohesive, interdisciplinary groups supported by peer-reviewed grants and Rutgers Cancer Institute shared resources. Faculty members collaborate with researchers from other cancer centers and universities across the country to advance the understanding of the science behind the disease to improve early detection, prevention and treatment of cancer.

Each multidisciplinary clinical program focuses on a specific type of cancer and is led by an academic physician who is an expert in the cause and treatment of that disease. Our compassionate health care team includes medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners, research nurse clinicians, treatment nurses, pathologists, social workers, oncology education specialists, pharmacists, and clinical psychologists.
