Oral Pathology

The Rutgers Health University Dental Associates Oral Pathology practice determines the reasons for conditions causing or resulting from structural or functional changes within the mouth. We address such changes by focusing on the mucosa (pink, smooth skin that lines the mouth), which is vulnerable to disease and infection. If you have noticeable changes or pain in your mouth, we can provide diagnosis, treatment, and preventative care.

One of the more common conditions we treat are oral lesions, also called mouth ulcers. Oral lesions are spots that occur within the lining of a person’s mouth. Even small ulcers can cause pain and discomfort. Some lesions can be predictive of cancer or other serious diseases. In extreme cases, lesions can be the result of autoimmune damage, dryness in the mouth, or inflammation of the mouth and lips.

One of our oral pathologists can determine if your condition is a serious disease or infection and recommend that you consult with a dental surgeon. Our practice has a range of specialists who work collaboratively and use leading-edge technology to tackle common and complex conditions. Our doctors are on the faculty at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research universities in the nation. Each carries the latest knowledge and techniques learned in the classroom to the exam room.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Problems with oral lesions and mouth discomfort can alter your lifestyle. An examination done promptly can avoid further damage to your teeth and mouth. During an exam, an oral pathology specialist will collect your medical history and examine your mouth. Physical characteristics such as hardness, size, color, and bleeding can provide valuable information for an initial diagnosis. A biopsy, in which an oral surgeon takes a small sample of the lesion for testing, can also reveal broader characteristics of the ulcer.

A mouth ulcer may not indicate a severe root problem and may heal on its own. In those cases, one of our specialists may prescribe topical creams or oral medications like steroids, which are effective for battling inflammation.
