The video endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera at the tip, has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of gastroenterology and hepatology conditions. The endoscope can be inserted through any natural opening, such as the mouth or rectum, and it enables physicians to see the insides of the digestive tract on a video monitor. Tiny surgical instruments can pass through an opening in an endoscope to collect biopsy samples, or to remove polyps, stones, and fluid.

Among the tests and procedures our physicians perform are

• Breath testing. A test that measures certain gases to help diagnose some conditions.
• Capsule endoscopy. A procedure that includes a patient swallowing a disposable, pill-sized camera that records images as it passes from the esophagus through the intestinal tract.
• Colonoscopy. A scope that examines the lining of the colon.
• EUS (endoscopic ultrasound). A test using sound waves from an ultrasound probe to help examine the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, and colon.
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy. A scope that examines the rectum and lower part of the colon.
• Manometry. A catheter with a water-filled balloon inserted through the nose to measure resting pressures in the esophagus, bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, or rectum.
• Paracentesis. A procedure to remove fluid from the abdomen.
• Upper GI endoscopy. A test using an endoscope to provide images of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (upper small intestine).
