Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery

The Rutgers Health Comprehensive Center for Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery has a commitment to clinical care and research of the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of cancers of the head and neck.

Treating cancer in the head and neck can be extremely challenging, is often complex, and requires a comprehensive clinical approach. That is why our practice presents all cases of cancer to our weekly head and neck tumor board. The tumor board is a panel that includes:

  • Head and neck surgeons
  • Medical oncologists
  • Nurses
  • Oral maxillofacial surgeons
  • Pathologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Radiologists
  • Microvascular reconstructive surgeons
  • Therapists

All tumor board members have expertise and knowledge of surgical oncology and reconstruction, radiation oncology, medical oncology, neuroradiology, pathology, and oral surgery. The group discusses individual patient cases to help create the most effective diagnostic and treatment plans. The tumor board may also recommend patients for enrollment in clinical trials.

Treatment

Head and neck cancers may receive treatment with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, or a combination of each. Our practice includes expertise in life-changing, minimally invasive techniques for cancer removal using transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and translaryngeal microsurgery (TLM). We also perform microvascular reconstructive surgery, which includes reconstruction of the tongue, jaw, and face.

All patients receive outstanding care before, during, and after cancer treatment from rehabilitation medicine physicians, as well as from experts in speech and language pathology, audiology, social work, nutrition, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy.

Physicians who serve the Rutgers Health Comprehensive Center for Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery are faculty members of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School or Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Both are part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of otolaryngology, and each brings life-changing knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
