The Rutgers Health Pre-Surgical Developmental Assessment for Potential Cochlear Implant program consists of clinical developmental psychologists from the Rutgers Health Institute for the Study of Child Development. Our clinical developmental psychologists conduct developmental assessments for children with profound hearing loss who are under consideration for cochlear implant surgery. The program’s goal is to provide the highest quality evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for pediatric patients and families.

The program’s psychologists work with a multidisciplinary team that includes audiologists, speech/language pathologists, and otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat physicians). These medical professionals assist families in weighing the risks and benefits of surgery, considering potential obstacles, and help them cope with the stresses and anxieties that may accompany implant surgery. Our psychologists remain available to help families after surgery, as children learn to understand new sounds and adjust to life with an implant.
