Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program

The Rutgers Health Pelvic Floor and Incontinence program takes a multidisciplinary approach to restoring pelvic function in men and women. Our approach provides great convenience to patients, who often need to seek treatment from many doctors across multiple medical specialties. Our physicians provide comprehensive diagnosis and thorough consultation in one location and in one visit.

Our program stretches across specialties by combining the expertise of urogynecologists, colorectal surgeons, urologists, and physical therapists. We work together to diagnose and treat pelvic floor conditions including:

  • Constipation
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Recto-vaginal fistula (an abnormal connection between the rectum and vagina) and vesico-vaginal fistula (a fistula that goes between the bladder and the vagina that allows involuntary urine flow)

Physical Therapy for Pelvic Floor Incontinence Conditions

Our program also offers physical therapy for people with pelvic floor problems by licensed physical therapists with certification from the American Physical Therapy Association. Our therapists tailor treatment that is consistent with leading-edge research and evidence-based data. Such treatment may include:

  • Biofeedback to assess the strength of the pelvic floor muscles
  • Bladder schedule training
  • Electrical stimulation to strengthen very weak muscles
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Manual therapy
  • Muscle training
  • Relaxation
  • Therapeutic exercise, including vaginal weights

Physicians who serve our program are on the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of incontinence and pelvic floor conditions. Each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
