Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center
The Rutgers Health Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center helps people manage kidney stones through surgical and nonsurgical treatments, dietary means, and counseling. The center’s goal is to treat kidney stones and prevent recurrence.
The center’s multidisciplinary approach includes board-certified urologists and a nephrologist who are experts in kidney stone removal. Our specialists work to determine the cause of stones, and our dietitians counsel patients on nutritional changes to prevent future stones.
Our physicians leverage leading-edge technology and techniques, including:
- Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL)
- An outpatient procedure using shock waves to break stones into small pieces that can pass out of the body through urine
- Flexible scopes and energy devices for removal of stones near the ureters
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy
- Insertion of a hollow tube into the kidney through a small incision in the back, so surgeons can break up and remove large kidney stones
- Robotic surgery
Physicians who serve the center are on the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of kidney stones and urology. Each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
