Urologic Laparoscopic Surgery
The Rutgers Health Urologic Laparoscopic Surgery practice offers treatments and minimally invasive procedures to promote safer and faster recovery for people with urologic disorders.
Our practice has expertise in laparoscopy, a technique of passing a scope through the abdominal wall to see inside the abdomen and pelvis. Laparoscopy is a diagnostic tool and an emerging surgical aid. Laparoscopic surgery occurs through tiny incisions in the body for removal or reconstruction of genital and urinary organs, lymph nodes, as well as kidney and adrenal tumors. By avoiding the large incisions of traditional "open" surgery, patients have less blood loss, less discomfort, shorter hospitalization, and faster healing.
We are one of a few programs in the U.S. to offer laparoscopic renal cryoablation for kidney tumors. Renal cryoablation aids the complete destruction of renal cancers by freezing cancer cells to less than -20° Celsius.
Robotic Surgery
We perform many laparoscopic surgeries with the daVinci® Robotic Surgical System. The daVinci tool aids in safe removal of cancerous prostate glands through small incisions. We also offer an active daVinci prostatectomy program. Its advantages include:
- Better preservation of the sphincter tissue and neurovascular bundles that govern urinary continence and erectile function
- Clearer images through a robust 3-D magnification system
- Greater dexterity for surgeons to reach specific areas, making dissections more precise
Endoscopic and Percutaneous Surgery
Our urologic surgeons use endoscopes to navigate through the urinary tract with ease. We enhance this navigation by using tools, such as lasers, to fit through these scopes for help with safe, effective management of conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and kidney stones. Because these techniques avoid open incisions and significant blood loss, most people receive treatment as outpatients. We also use laser vaporization tools to remove benign prostate glands bloodlessly.
Additional treatments and services that our practice provides include:
- Adrenalectomy
- Diagnosis and treatment of children with undescended testicle(s)
- Laparoscopic
- Nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy
- Partial nephrectomy
- Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) to remove abdominal lymph nodes to treat testicular cancer and determine exact stage and type
- Robotic (daVinci)-assisted laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty
- Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy and tissue ablation
Physicians who serve our practice are on the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of laparoscopic surgery and urology. Each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
