University Vein Center

The Rutgers Health University Vein Center provides comprehensive evaluation and management of lower-extremity venous disease and leg swelling. Our physicians specialize in venous surgery and use life-changing treatment for varicose veins, leg fatigue, swelling, and ulcers. All procedures are minimally invasive, without incisions or pain.

The center offers treatment and services, including:

  • Endovenous radiofrequency saphenous vein ablation
  • Expert treatment for venous ulcers
  • Injection sclerotherapy for spider veins
  • Minimally invasive varicose vein removal

Venous Disease and Varicose Veins

Risk factors for vein problems include a family history, being female, previous blood clots, advancing age, obesity, and standing for long periods. Women with multiple pregnancies are also at higher risk. Common symptoms include leg heaviness, fatigue, swelling, varicose and spider veins, and ulcerations.

Dysfunctional valves in the veins of legs are the most common cause of venous disease symptoms. Such problems often result from clotting or valvular reflux (a backward or return flow of blood), which leads to pooling of blood. That usually leads to varicose veins, swelling, and discomfort.

Most of our venous procedures occur with minimal sedation and local anesthesia; all are outpatient procedures, which aid rapid recovery and early return to work. Many are office-based, occurring in the comfort of an office suite.

Our surgeons use sclerotherapy treatment for smaller varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy is much more effective than skin laser treatments and is painless. A sclerosant solution irritates the vein, causing it to close and encounter reabsorption by the body. Treatment occurs over the course of a few weeks in an office setting, and patients can return to work the same or following day.

Physicians who serve the center are on the faculty of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of venous disease and vascular medicine. Each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
