Overview Dr. Koneru has clinical expertise and more than 25 years of experience in surgery of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, stomach and duodenum. He treats patients with such problems at University Hospital and St. Michael?s Medical center in Newark and at Trinitas Regional Medical center in Elizabeth. Dr. Koneru participates in education and training of surgery residents at University Hospital and at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. In addition, he teaches medical students at Rutgers and from St. George?s University at Trinitas. He has received several teaching awards. Dr. Koneru has pursued research in liver transplantation and other related fields for nearly two decades. During this period he mentored several residents in research and has 99 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Koneru obtained undergraduate and graduate medical education from Mysore Medical College in India. After coming to the U.S. he completed surgical residency at Washington Hospital Center. Thereafter he completed a fellowship in abdominal transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1988, he joined the department of surgery at Rutgers and initiated the liver transplantation program, and served as the director of the program and chief of the division of transplant and HBP surgery until 2017.
