Dr. Douglas Opler graduated from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study in New York City, where he studied evolutionary anthropology. A change of plans led him away from anthropology to SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, where he earned his medical degree. After graduation, he completed a psychiatry residency and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. In 2013, Dr. Opler joined the department of psychiatry at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where he teaches and sees patients as an attending psychiatrist on the consultation liaison service of the affiliated University Hospital in Newark. Dr. Opler has published on diverse topics, including somatization, mindfulness, stimulant use disorder, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, and Andy Warhol?s views on psychiatrists. He has presented at national conferences and invited lectures at other institutions, including on the psychological role of humor, among other topics. In 2017, he was a recipient of the Association for Academic Psychiatry?s Early Career Development Award. When not working, Dr. Opler enjoys raising his children, playing musical instruments, and painting.
