Critical Care Anesthesiology/Trauma Program

The Rutgers Health Critical Care Anesthesiology/Trauma program provides services to the University Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center in Newark, NJ. We treat about 3,000 trauma patients each year, many critically ill and many with brain, spinal cord, and orthopaedic injuries.

We work in the trauma center’s 14-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU) for many types of patients, including those who need care following invasive abdominal and thoracic surgeries, liver transplants, or may be experiencing multi-organ failure. We are part of the SICU multidisciplinary care team, and work closely with experts in many other disciplines including respiratory care, nutrition, and palliative care.

Our program also works extensively in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit within the trauma center. This 6-bed unit cares for patients undergoing cardiac procedures, invasive neck and airway surgeries, as well as other critically ill patients.

Physicians who serve our program are faculty members of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Most are active in teaching and research, and each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.

If you or a loved one becomes a patient at the University Hospital Level I Trauma Center, the Rutgers Health Critical Care Anesthesiology/Trauma program will be on hand to provide outstanding care.
