Physicians at the Rutgers Health Biliary and Pancreas Disease Center, in conjunction with our surgery, radiology, oncology, and pathology colleagues, offer a multidisciplinary approach to patients with gallstone disease and malignancies of the pancreas and biliary system. Our physicians use leading-edge endoscopic technology, including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), in diagnosing and treating gallstone disease, as well as malignancies of the pancreas and biliary system.

Doctors who serve the center are on the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of gastroenterology, hepatology, and biliary-pancreas disease. Each brings leading-edge knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

EUS is a state-of-the-art technology that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain images of internal organs in the chest and abdominal areas, so that all layers of the intestinal tract can be seen. EUS helps determine the stage of gastrointestinal and lung cancers, and in finding bile duct stones. It is a minimally invasive alternative to exploratory surgery to obtain tissue samples from abdominal and chest organs such as the

• Chest and abdominal lymph nodes
• Gallbladder
• Liver
• Pancreas
• Spleen

Our physicians also use EUS to guide the drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts (fluid around the pancreas) and provide celiac plexus block—injections of pain medication that help relieve abdominal pain that is often due to chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer.
